The art of small talk
Thank you all for your help.
Kakishima will be in charge of this staff blog.
This might be sudden, but are you good at small talk?
I used to think that small talk was something that people who "have a wide range of topics to talk about" or "are good at telling interesting stories" were good at.
However, my perspective has recently changed a little after talking to various people through my work.
What's important in casual conversation might not necessarily be telling interesting stories, but rather showing genuine interest in the other person.
For example,
"Have you been busy lately?"
"What do you do on your days off?"
"Is there anything you've been really into lately?"
At first glance, it may seem like an ordinary question, but it can reveal the other person's likes and dislikes and values.
And from there the conversation expands. It's interesting, isn't it?
I myself used to think, "I have to say something clever."
However, if you listen to what the other person has to say, the conversation will surprisingly continue naturally.
Perhaps what's important isn't so much what you say, but creating an atmosphere where the other person feels comfortable talking.
At THE SALON, there are times when you'll be meeting people for the first time.
Some people may be a little nervous at first, but there are moments when a smile appears through a short conversation, and the distance between them naturally shrinks.
Every time I see a scene like that, I'm reminded of the incredible power of casual conversation.
Of course, I myself am still learning.
Going forward, I want to continue to listen attentively to what others have to say and refine my communication skills so that people feel comfortable and at ease when they talk to me.
If there is a chance, I would appreciate your help again next time.
